Written by the Cabos Airport Transportation operations team — we drive these routes every day.

La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, sits 184-214 km (114-133 miles) north of Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) — a 2h15-3h drive depending on route. It is the longest transfer we run out of SJD, priced by distance rather than by resort zone. A private van starts at $292 USD one-way (up to 8 passengers), all-inclusive with flight tracking; a Sprinter for larger groups runs $492.

How far is La Paz from Los Cabos International Airport?

La Paz is not one of the seven Los Cabos resort zones — it is a separate city, the state capital of Baja California Sur, about two and a half hours up the peninsula. Two paved routes connect SJD to La Paz. The shorter option runs via Highway 19 and San Pedro (roughly 184-195 km / 114-121 miles, 2h15-2h45m). The longer option runs via Highway 1 through the East Cape and Los Barriles (roughly 210-214 km / 130-133 miles, closer to 3 hours), which trades a few extra minutes for East Cape coastline views instead of the inland Sierra pass. We default to the faster route unless you request the scenic one.

What does a private transfer from SJD to La Paz cost?

Because the route is priced by real distance rather than the standard Los Cabos resort tiers, La Paz is our highest one-way fare out of SJD. Pricing is still all-inclusive: vehicle, driver, taxes, tolls (two toll booths, roughly $95 MXN combined), bottled water, and child seats on request. No cash negotiation, no per-person shared-shuttle math — one flat rate for the vehicle.

Private transfer vs. the bus or a rental car to La Paz

For a 2.5-3 hour intercity drive, the calculus is different than a short resort-zone hop. Here is how the three realistic options compare for getting from SJD to La Paz.

How the options compare for SJD to La Paz
OptionApprox. costTimeNotes
Private transfer (us)$292 USD / vehicle2h15-3h, directFlight-tracked, door-to-door, no transfers or waiting
Intercity bus (Autobuses Águila / Estrella Blanca / ABC)~$20-27 USD / person~3h20m+Departs from the Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo bus terminal, not the airport curb — you still need a taxi or transfer to reach the terminal first, plus scheduled stops
Rental car$50-90 USD / day + insurance2h15-3h, directYou drive after a long flight; mountain/coastal two-lane highway, some stretches unlit at night

The intercity bus is the cheapest per-person option if your schedule matches the departure times, but it leaves from a downtown bus terminal rather than the airport — meaning a taxi or transfer to the terminal, a fixed departure window, and a longer total travel time once you add the connection. A rental car gives you flexibility for stops along the way (Todos Santos, El Triunfo, the East Cape), but the SJD-La Paz highway includes stretches of two-lane mountain road that are best driven in daylight, and most rental agencies charge a drop-off fee if you return the car in La Paz instead of Los Cabos. A private transfer costs more than the bus per person for a solo traveler, but for two or more people it is typically cheaper per person than the bus once you account for the terminal transfer, and it is the only option that tracks your flight and goes airport-curb to your exact La Paz address with no stops.

Is La Paz worth the drive from Cabos?

La Paz is the working capital of Baja California Sur — a real Mexican city with a university (UABCS), state government offices, and a permanent population, not a resort corridor built for tourism. Most of our La Paz bookings fall into one of three trips:

  • Ferry connections — the Pichilingue ferry terminal north of town runs car-and-passenger ferries to Topolobampo and Mazatlán on the mainland (Baja Ferries), a common route for guests continuing overland through Mexico.
  • Whale shark and Espíritu Santo excursions — La Paz Bay hosts whale sharks roughly October through April and boat trips to Isla Espíritu Santo (a UNESCO biosphere reserve) run year-round; many Cabos guests add a day or two here specifically for this.
  • The Malecón — La Paz's waterfront boardwalk, calmer and more local than anything in Cabo San Lucas, with sunset views over the Sea of Cortez and a walkable downtown of restaurants and galleries.
  • Business and university travel — state government, medical, and UABCS-related trips that have nothing to do with the resort corridor at all.

What to expect when you land at SJD

Los Cabos International Airport has two terminals (T1 for domestic + most US carriers, T2 for some international). After Immigration and Customs, follow the "Ground Transportation" signs to the outside of the arrivals hall.

  1. Walk past the timeshare salespeople (they wear logo polos — politely decline, they are not airport staff).
  2. Cross the curbside lane and look for "Shaded Area #3" — our host meets every Cabos Airport Transportation guest there.
  3. They will be holding a board with your last name. Show your booking confirmation if asked.
  4. Your vehicle is parked steps away, stocked with water for the long drive. We recommend a restroom stop before departure — the next reliable stop is roughly an hour up the highway.

Areas and hotels in La Paz

La Paz splits mainly into the Malecón/downtown core and the CostaBaja marina area north of town, with the Pichilingue ferry terminal and beaches further north still. Tell us your exact address at booking — we route the driver directly.

  • Malecón / Centro — the boardwalk and downtown core, walkable to restaurants, the cathedral, and the aquarium; boutique hotels line the waterfront.
  • CostaBaja Resort & Marina — a resort-and-marina development a few minutes north of downtown, the closest thing La Paz has to a Cabos-style resort.
  • Pichilingue — the ferry terminal and northern beaches (Balandra, Tecolote), 20-25 minutes past downtown.

Day trip or one-way transfer?

Most La Paz bookings are one-way — guests flying into SJD and continuing to La Paz for a ferry, a whale-shark trip, or business, then flying home out of La Paz International Airport (LAP) instead of backtracking to SJD. If you are staying in Cabos and want La Paz as a day trip, the 4.5-6 hour round-trip drive makes it a long day; we recommend at least one overnight in La Paz to make the trip worthwhile, and we can quote a multi-day wait/return booking on request.
