About this transfer

GuideUpdated May 13, 20265 min read

Cabo San Lucas is roughly 32 km (20 miles) southwest of Los Cabos International Airport (SJD). With a private transfer, you can expect a 30-45 minute door-to-door ride depending on traffic and hotel zone. One-way pricing starts at $107 USD for a private van — child seats, bottled water, and flight tracking included.

How long is the transfer from SJD to Cabo San Lucas?

The drive from Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) to Cabo San Lucas is 32 km along Highway 1 (Carretera Transpeninsular). Without traffic, the ride takes 30 minutes. What does an airport transfer to Cabo San Lucas cost?

Cabo San Lucas pricing is the operator-locked Los Cabos standard tier — the rate displayed on the homepage and used as the baseline for every transfer to this zone. Specific hotels in Cabo San Lucas may price slightly differently when the hotel sits inside a private community (Pedregal, Quivira, etc.). The price you see at checkout is the price you pay — no fuel surcharge, no airport fee, no toll add-on.

What to expect when you land at SJD

Los Cabos International (SJD) is one of the busiest airports in northwestern Mexico. After you clear immigration and customs, your private host is waiting outside the arrivals terminal at Shaded Area #3 — a covered meeting spot that all licensed private transfer operators in Cabos use. Look for an embroidered uniform shirt and a board with your name.

  • No need to navigate the indoor "transportation" hawkers — they are taxi-sindicato or timeshare reps, not private transfers.
  • Skip the indoor pitches and walk directly to Shaded Area #3. Your driver will spot you first.
  • If a stranger asks about your booking inside the terminal, politely say "No, thank you" and keep walking.

Cabo San Lucas neighborhoods: Marina, Médano Beach, and Downtown

Cabo San Lucas town splits into three walkable areas that sit within a few minutes of each other, distinct from the separate Pedregal hills and the Pacific-side communities covered on our Pacífico zone page. Tell us which one your hotel or rental is in at booking — the drop-off logistics differ slightly for each.

The Marina

The Marina is the working harbor at the center of town — sport-fishing fleets, boardwalk restaurants, and the dock where day-trip boats depart for El Arco (the Arch) at Land's End. Marina Fiesta Resort & Spa sits directly on the water here. Drive time from SJD is the fastest zone in Cabo San Lucas: 32 km, 30-40 minutes (see the table above).

During peak season (December-April) and on cruise-ship arrival days, the streets around the Marina get noticeably busier — the same congestion that can add 15-20 minutes to trips continuing past Cabo San Lucas toward the Pacific side. Your driver already routes around this; if your hotel is inside the Marina itself, it rarely adds meaningful time to your own transfer.

Médano Beach

Médano Beach is the only calm, swimmable beach inside Cabo San Lucas proper — a short walk from the Marina, lined with beach clubs and hotel row properties including Pueblo Bonito Rosé Resort. (Pacific-side resorts on our Pacífico zone page sit on rougher, west-facing water and are a separate 35-60 minute drive from SJD.) Expect 34 km and 35-45 minutes door-to-door from the airport.

Downtown

Downtown is the grid of streets immediately inland from the Marina — restaurants, shops, and nightlife within walking distance of both the harbor and Médano Beach. It sits close enough to the Marina that transfer time is effectively the same, 30-40 minutes from SJD. Downtown Cabo San Lucas + Médano Beach together make up the taxi sindicato's official "Zone 4," priced at $90-115 USD one-way — the same reference zone this page's $107 private-transfer rate is benchmarked against. Costco Cabo San Lucas sits near the entrance to downtown, a useful landmark if you are planning a grocery stop on the way in (see the FAQ below).

Cabo San Lucas vs. San José del Cabo — not the same town

Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo are two separate towns, 32 km apart, connected by the Tourist Corridor highway — not two names for the same place. San José del Cabo sits immediately next to SJD airport, a 15-20 minute transfer; Cabo San Lucas is the marina town at the southern tip of the peninsula, 30-45 minutes away. If your confirmation email or hotel address says "San José del Cabo," you want our San José del Cabo zone page instead — the drive time and pricing are different from the Cabo San Lucas rates on this page.

Cabo San Lucas is home to the largest concentration of luxury resorts in Baja California Sur — both inside the city (Marina, Médano Beach) and on the surrounding hills (Pedregal). Every property linked below has a hotel-specific transfer page with exact pricing, pickup notes, and meet-and-greet logistics tailored to that hotel.

  • Pueblo Bonito Pacifica, Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach, Pueblo Bonito Rosé

Private transfer vs. taxi, shared shuttle, or rental car in Cabo San Lucas

Cabo San Lucas has an active taxi sindicato (union) that controls most curbside taxi pickups from SJD. Sindicato rates to Cabo San Lucas typically run $80-$120 USD one-way, but the meter is not standardized — drivers can quote you on the spot. Uber operates in Cabos with restrictions and is not permitted to pick up curbside at SJD airport arrivals.

A licensed private transfer locks the price in writing at booking, runs on flight-tracked schedules so your driver is there even if you land 90 minutes late, and is operated by a single accountable provider — not a rotating pool of independent drivers.

How the options compare for SJD to Cabo San Lucas
OptionApprox. costTime to Cabo San LucasNotes
Private transfer (us)$107 USD / vehicle30-45 min directFlight-tracked, all-inclusive, no stops
Taxi sindicato$80-120 USD / vehicle30-45 minMeter not standardized, cash at arrivals kiosk
Shared shuttle$13-40 USD / person90-120 min2-4 hotel stops, 15-60 min fill wait
Rental car$50-90 USD / day + insurance30-45 minYou drive after a long flight; no flight-delay coverage

Shared shuttles undercut a private transfer on a per-person basis if you are traveling solo or as a pair, but for Cabo San Lucas specifically the ride itself takes roughly twice as long — 90-120 minutes once you factor in the fill wait and the 2-4 other hotels on the route, versus 30-45 minutes direct. After baggage claim you walk to a shuttle-company desk (Cabo Shuttle, Discount Cabo, and similar operators run this route), present your voucher, and wait 15-60 minutes for the van to fill before departure. Shared shuttles also do not carry child seats, so families traveling with kids typically book private. See our full private-vs-shared-shuttle breakdown for the per-passenger math and where each option wins.

A rental car makes sense if you plan to explore beyond Cabo San Lucas — Todos Santos, the Tourist Corridor, the East Cape. For a straight airport-to-hotel trip it rarely saves money once insurance and fuel are added, and unlike a private transfer, a rental car reservation does not adjust for a delayed flight.

Late-night and early-morning arrivals

We operate transfers 24/7. Late-night arrivals (after 10 PM) and early-morning departures (before 6 AM) require no surcharge and no advance call — confirm the time at booking and the right driver is automatically assigned. For weather delays, your driver waits without extra charge as long as the new arrival time is within 4 hours of the original.
