East Cape Airport Transportation | Los Barriles & Cabo Pulmo

The East Cape is the stretch of Sea of Cortez coastline northeast of San José del Cabo, reached via Highway 1 (Carretera Transpeninsular) and, for the last miles, Highway 4 toward La Ribera. Los Barriles is the larger of the two towns — a fishing and windsurfing community about 105-108 km (65-67 miles) from SJD, entirely on paved road, roughly 1.5-2 hours depending on traffic through San José del Cabo. Cabo Pulmo sits further along the coast, roughly 95-99 km (59-61.5 miles) from the airport in a straight driving sense but a longer 2-2.5 hour trip, because the highway ends at La Ribera and the final stretch into the village is washboard dirt road rather than pavement.

East Cape pricing (Los Barriles and Cabo Pulmo, identical) is all-inclusive: vehicle, driver, taxes, tolls, bottled water, and child seats on request. No cash negotiation at the curb and no per-person shared-shuttle math — you book one vehicle and that is the total fare.

The East Cape is a different Los Cabos than the resort corridor around Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo — fewer hotels, no nightlife strip, and a coastline built around two things: fish and reef.

• Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park is one of the oldest living coral reefs in the Sea of Cortez and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — a rare marine reserve that has rebounded dramatically since fishing was restricted in 1995, now drawing divers and snorkelers for close encounters with reef sharks, sea turtles, and dense fish schools.
• Los Barriles is a longtime sport-fishing base for East Cape billfish grounds (marlin, dorado, tuna) and, from roughly November through March, one of Baja's best-known kiteboarding and windsurfing destinations thanks to the steady "El Norte" winds off the Sea of Cortez.
• Buena Vista, just south of Los Barriles, and Punta Pescadero, north of town, are smaller beachfront communities that share the same fishing-fleet, low-key character.
• The pace is slower and the infrastructure is thinner than the resort corridor — travelers come for the water, not the pool bar, and most visitors arrange transportation in advance rather than expecting a taxi rank.

Highway 1 is fully paved as far as La Ribera, a fishing town about two-thirds of the way from SJD to Cabo Pulmo. From La Ribera, the road to Cabo Pulmo village turns to washboard dirt — a graded but unpaved surface that requires a slower pace (roughly 15-20 mph is realistic) and can turn muddy or rutted after summer and early-fall rain. This is normal for the East Cape, not a wrong turn: Cabo Pulmo has stayed deliberately low-development since it became a national marine park, and the unpaved access road is part of that. Our drivers know the route and run it regularly; we simply build the extra time into the 2-2.5 hour estimate above rather than promising a faster ride we cannot deliver in the rainy season.

There is no shared shuttle or public bus route from SJD directly to Los Barriles or Cabo Pulmo — the East Cape is too remote and low-volume for that model. Realistically, you are choosing between a private transfer and a rental car.

A rental car gives you flexibility to explore Los Barriles or make stops at Buena Vista and Punta Pescadero, but read the rental contract before driving to Cabo Pulmo — several agencies exclude damage on unpaved roads from standard coverage, which matters on the washboard stretch past La Ribera. A private transfer costs a flat $184-$200 for the vehicle regardless of how many passengers you have (up to capacity), tracks your flight if it is delayed, and puts a driver behind the wheel who runs the dirt-road stretch regularly rather than encountering it for the first time.

Los Cabos International Airport has two terminals (T1 for domestic and most US carriers, T2 for some international arrivals). After Immigration and Customs, follow the "Ground Transportation" signs to the outside of the arrivals hall.

1. Walk past the timeshare salespeople inside the terminal (they wear logo polos and offer "free transportation" — politely decline, they are not airport staff).
2. Cross the curbside lane and look for "Shaded Area #3" — our host meets every Cabos Airport Transportation guest there.
3. They will be holding a board with your last name. Show your booking confirmation if asked.
4. Your vehicle is stocked with water for the long drive. We recommend a restroom stop before departure — reliable stops thin out once you pass San José del Cabo.

• La Ribera — the last paved-road town before Cabo Pulmo, with a fishing fleet of its own and the turnoff for Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park.
• Cabo Pulmo — the village at the heart of the marine park: a handful of dive shops, small hotels, and restaurants, reached via the unpaved final stretch described above.
